Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to sign Ivan Toney for a fee of £40m due to the forward’s contract situation at Brentford.
Toney has been made Tottenham’s top target for the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to sign a centre-forward. The 28-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his deal with Brentford and the Bees will reluctantly sanction his sale this summer.
Brentford value Toney at around £65m but Spurs are hopeful the player’s contract situation can lead to a significant reduction on that fee as the transfer window progresses. Chelsea and Arsenal have also been linked with Toney but it is Spurs who are the frontrunners as their London rivals consider alternative targets.
Toney is currently with the England squad at Euro 2024 as the Three Lions prepare to face Spain in the tournament’s final this weekend.
He has made two substitute appearances at Euro 2024, assisting Harry Kane in the Round of 16 win over Slovakia and scoring from the spot in the quarter-final shootout against Switzerland.
Spurs have identified Toney as their primary focus for the transfer window, according to GiveMeSport.
The forward, who has 36 goals and 11 assists in 83 appearances since Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League, has expressed a desire for an exit as he looks to compete in European competition.
HITC understands that Atletico Madrid have joined the hunt for England striker Ivan Toney amid transfer interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
England are preparing for one of the biggest games of their lives as they take on Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday.
Ivan Toney is expected to start from the bench, with Harry Kane leading the line and Ollie Watkins the other option for Gareth Southgate.
Regardless of the end result, the Brentford hitman needs to sort out his long-term future, with 12 months remaining on his contract and the new Premier League season just over a month away.
Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal looking closely at Ivan Toney
The 28-year-old has made it clear that he is looking to leave Brentford this summer and he has turned down numerous offers to sign an extension in West London.
Toney has been looked at closely by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Manchester United, but as yet, nobody has been willing to step up.

Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title on the last day of the previous campaign and some believe they need that focal point up front to go up another level.
Whilst Ange Postecoglou’s major signing at Tottenham so far this summer is Archie Gray, but he is looking to further bolster his squad after their fifth-placed finish.
One issue for Toney is Brentford’s unwillingness to drop his asking below £50 million – indeed, at this point, HITC is told that it would take at least £60m to land him.
Atletico Madrid looking at Ivan Toney
Brentford’s resolve is yet to be tested, but it could be and HITC understands one of the clubs to have made recent enquiries is Atletico Madrid.
AC Milan had shown an interest, but they have instead gone for Alvaro Morata – from Atletico – and they are now in the market for a new number 9.
They have looked at Girona’s inspiring hitman Artem Dovbyk and Dutch Cup winner with Feyenoord, Santiago Gimenez, but they have also now done their work on Toney.
Toney isn’t the only Euro 2024 finalist the Spanish giants are looking at because Atletico Madrid are also keen on Chelsea midfielder, Conor Gallagher.
