Son Heung-min explains why he does not want to be called a Tottenham legend yet

The Tottenham Hotspur captain has been speaking about his time at the club and what Ange Postecoglou’s tenure has done for him

Son Heung-min does not want to be called a Tottenham legend until he can help bring silverware to the club.

The Spurs captain has enjoyed another productive season in Ange Postecoglous’ debut campaign, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists for his team-mates. Son also passed 400 appearances for the club this season and 300 in the Premier League while reaching 162 goals for Tottenham.

When the 31-year-old looks back on his nine years so far in N17, he has got a lot of individual achievements and happy memories but he does not want to be referred to as a legend until he has achieved something with the team.

It’s been almost 10 years at this amazing club. To be honest, it’s been an incredible journey. There have been so many players I’ve played alongside and managers I’ve worked with who have been so helpful and brought me so many fond memories and respect along the way,” said in an interview in the club’s final matchday programme of the season.

“I still want to make things happen. It’s not down to me to decide if I’m a legend at this club. I wouldn’t call myself a legend because I want to win something here and that’s why I’m so committed. I think we have a bright future with this manager and this squad so we have to keep improving so we can achieve more together.

When my time does come to leave this amazing club, I hope everyone can call me a legend which will be a huge honour and one I would be so grateful for.”

Son has relished working with Postecoglou, who he believes has put a smile back on the faces of the players after a tough campaign last time out.

“Ange has brought an enjoyment to the game, almost like when you’re playing for the love of the game as a kid, and that’s how you should approach it – not overthinking it too much and just enjoy doing what you love,” said the skipper.

“I think that’s why he always delivers the right message and lesson. As a human being, he’s very family-orientated and has brought that into the group. He cares deeply about the whole squad which is very inspiring. I’m very, very pleased to be working with him.

“Playing an exciting brand of football is all well and good but you have to really buy into and believe in Ange’s style of football. You have to be all in, and everyone here is committed to it and willing to put in the sacrifice to be successful which is very important.

“This is only our first season. I believe we have made big steps forward but still there is massive room to improve. We have to look at the positives in order to move forward in the strongest way possible.”
