Tottenham Hotspur set a new club record in the Premier League during their victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Spurs had already extended their goalscoring streak to 38 Premier League matches – the equivalent of an entire season – when Timo Werner cancelled out Eberechi Eze’s second half goal with a close range strike from Brennan Johnson’s low cross. Goals from vice-captain Cristian Romero and then skipper Son Heung-min sealed the win before Tottenham managed another record.
The north London club managed to break their record for the most passes completed in a Premier League game as they made 732 against Palace, with the visitors managing just 158 in return as Tottenham dominated the possession with 78% of the ball during the entire encounter and 82% in the first half alone.
Romero had broken the passing record for a Spurs player in a Premier League match in the reverse fixture, October’s 2-1 win at Selhurst Park, and now the Argentine and his team-mates combined to break their own team one. This time around Romero accounted for 124 of the passes, Yves Bissouma 115 and Micky van de Ven 100 as Tottenham sprayed the ball around and eventually found a way through.
Ange Postecoglou‘s men travel to Aston Villa next weekend in a crunch game in the race for the top four with Unai Emery’s side currently five points ahead of Spurs but having played a game more. Tottenham will look to dominate possession again but they will need to make the most of having the ball because of Villa’s ability and pace on the counter attack.
