Bayern dispatched a depleted United 4-3 in a chaotic opening Champions League game of Group A.
The defeat is United’s fourth in six matches, with Erik ten Hag’s side contending with lacklustre performances on the pitch, a spate of injuries and several off-the-field issues.
However, the main talking point from Bayern’svictory of United was a penalty awarded to the Bavarian side in the second half, when the scores were at 2-1.
A Bayern corner was met by Dayot Upamecano, with the Frenchman nodding the ball towards Christian Eriksen hand from point blank range. While the Dane’s hand was in an unnatural position, it would have been impossible for him to have moved his arm out of the way given his proximity to the Bayern centre-back.
The referee waved away the Bayern appeals only to then be alerted to the incident by the video assistant referee (VAR). Of course, upon pointing to the spot Harry Kane emphatically dispatched his penalty.
Several United fans on social media have noted a similar incident involving United from earlier this season that led to a different decision from VAR.
Indeed, against Tottenham, Alejandro Garnacho rifled a shot into Christian Romero’s arm from close range, which led to massive calls for a penalty.

However, Michael Oliver waved away the appeals, even though Romero’s arm was in an unnatural position, presumably because of the distance between Garnacho and the Spurs defender.
Of course, it has also been noted that these two incidents were in different competitions, where rules regarding refereeing and the use of VAR slightly differ.
