Nottingham Forest tried hard to land a new forward during the January transfer window.
Evangelos Marinakis was desperate to bring a new striker to the club. The Reds have just Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi for the remainder of the season and that’s not ideal when it comes to them both staying fit.
Yoane Wissa was a top target for Forest. The club saw a couple of bids rejected for the player who is likely to be worth around £40 million, with Brentford extremely unwilling to discuss a deal during January.
Igor Jesus was another on the list for Forest. Arsenal saw a loan bid rejected for the Botafogo striker and he’s decided to stay put with the reigning champions until the summer when he will likely head for European climates.
Lastly, there was a loose link to Matheus Cunha. However, not only did he remain at the club but Cunha signed a new contract which will trigger a £62.5 million release clause during the summer transfer window.
Matheus Cunha update emerges with Aston Villa, Forest and Arsenal keen
The Reds might now be facing a losing battle to sign the striker. Although Morgan Gibbs-White has already endorsed the arrival of Cunha, he may feel that his future lies at a bigger, more established outfit than Forest.
Ben Jacobs has been discussing the future of Cunha with Give Me Sport. He believes that a deal is there to be done and has offered some interesting information on the price that clubs might have to pay to get him away from Wolves in the summer.
He’s claimed: “I think that suitors are looking at Cunha – whether it’s Arsenal or Aston Villa or others – they will feel that regardless of Wolves going down or staying up, there’s a deal there to be had in the summer.
“And that may not necessarily be specifically by triggering the release clause. They may be able to work around its ballpark to get a slightly more preferable deal.”
What Clinton Morrison said about Matheus Cunha
For a little while, Morrison had his kids playing academy football at Forest. As a result, he might be rooting for the Reds to win the race to sign Brazilian player Cunha ahead of next season.
Earlier this month, Morrison raved about Cunha. He scored a brilliant goal against Blackburn in the FA Cup and as a result, earned himself some kind words from the pundit.
He said on Sky Sports: “He’s outstanding, there’s a lot of top teams looking at him and in the summer he will still move on. He has the X-Factor, he can drop into pockets and he scores plenty of goals. He could play for one of the top, top teams.”
Cunha has now scored 12 goals in 24 Premier League matches this season. His latest came against Liverpool and it’s clear that bigger things beckon for the 25-year-old player.
Forest will definitely go on the lookout for a new forward in the summer. European football could help attract a quality player and Cunha ticks a lot of boxes for the Reds.
