Newcastle United fans couldn’t help but mock Mikel Arteta’s past comments after taking a 2-0 lead at St James’ Park.
The Magpies headed into Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final with a two-goal advantage after beating Arsenal at The Emirates last month and they were able to replicate that scoreline on Tyneside.
Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon scored either side of half-time to book Newcastle a spot at Wembley for next month’s Carabao Cup final.

After Newcastle’s 2-0 win in the first leg a month ago, Mikel Arteta complained about the Carabao Cup match ball with the Arsenal boss bizarrely claiming “it flies differently”.
When Gordon fired Newcastle into a 2-0 lead on Wednesday night, Toon fans were quick to mock Arteta’s comments with an incredible chant.Newcastle fans were heard chanting “Mikel Arteta it must be the ball”. The chant was heard ringing around St James’ Park over and over in the final half an hour of the match.
When is the 2025 Carabao Cup final?
Two years after the disappointment of the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United, Newcastle will have a second shot at silverware next month.
Newcastle fans will make the trip down to the capital next month, with the final taking place on Sunday, March 16th.
Their opponents in the final will be decided on Thursday evening when Liverpool face Tottenham in their semi-final second leg. Spurs currently lead that tie 1-0.
Newcastle’s last trophy was lifted in the 1954/55 season but after a remarkable cup run this season, this side has a chance to end the silverware drought.
