Aston Villa are reportedly still on James Ward-Prowse’s trail as he is set to depart Southampton this summer.
The midfielder is set to end his 20-year stint with the Saints following their relegation to the Championship. The Saints’ 11-year stay in the top-flight ended when they fell to a home defeat against Fulham last month.
Following their return to the Championship, there have been questions about Ward-Prowse’s immediate future. But he could be set to make a swift return to the top-flight.
Villa, Newcastle, West Ham and now Wolves are all in the race to land the player, reports The Sun. The 28-year-old was previously subject of a £25million bid from Villa.
He is still under contract until 2026 and is claimed to be valued at £40million by the club. Speaking about his future, the midfielder did not rule anything out.
“This is a club that has meant a lot to me,” he said. I’ve been here for 20 years and had a fantastic journey, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
You never know what is going to happen in the future. I come away this season with my head held high knowing I’ve done everything I can for this club, not only this year but ever since I came through the door as an eight year old.
“To play a part in not maintaining that Premier League status hurts me but I’m sure this club will be back in the future.”
