Tottenham reportedly considered bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to north London in January as Antonio Conte looked to bolster his frontline, but they signed Arnaut Danjuma instead.
It has been revealed why Antonio Conte and Daniel Levy decided against signing Cristiano Ronaldo last year. The 38-year-old striker parted company with Manchester United in November following an explosive TV interview with Piers Morgan.
The Red Devils were said to have been ‘furious’ after Ronaldo’s attack of the club caught them by surprise, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner claiming that he felt betrayed. United reportedly sought legal advice and he was subsequently allowed to leave as a free agent.
Naturally, a handful of the world’s richest clubs were linked with signing Ronaldo. And, according to the Daily Mail, Tottenham contemplated bringing the Portugal international to north London before eventually deciding against a move.
The report states that Levy opened informal talks with Conte in the canteen at Hotspur Way. But, the duo, who were on much better terms back then, agreed that Ronaldo wasn’t the right signing for Tottenham and, instead, signed Arnaut Danjuma and Pedro Porro.
The Portuguese star went on to sign for Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr, becoming one of the highest paid players in the world. As for Conte, Spurs parted ways with the Italian during the international break after he unleashed a furious rant on the club.
While Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini, has taken the reins, Tottenham are still without a permanent head coach. Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino have both been heavily linked with replacing the Italian in north London, but Levy has been told to entrust Vincent Kompany.

As quoted by the Evening Standard, Tony Cascarino claimed that the Burnley boss would be the ‘best fit’. The former Chelsea star said: “In the past Tottenham have just made an obvious choice, picking managers with the best CVs, but it’s time for them to be brave, especially as Harry Kane may well depart, which would create a completely new dynamic at the club.
“I think Vincent Kompany would be an excellent appointment after his miraculous feats at Burnley this season. He’s had little money but transformed them, adopting a new playing style.”
