Nottingham Forest allowed a number of players to leave the club in the summer and it’s always fascinating to see what they go on to achieve once the City Ground is a thing of the past.
The Reds waved goodbye to over 20 players in the summer as Nuno Espirito Santo set about clearing the decks to allow him the chance to work with a much smaller squad of players
Forest had to make room for a host of new signings, with 11 added in the end. Santiago Gimenez proved one that got away for Forest, with the Reds coming up short in a striker search.
Another position of concern was between the posts. Forest actually made an offer to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher but the bid fell short of the club’s valuation.
Matt Turner was actually offered to the Kop giants as part of the deal. With the deal not being of interest to Liverpool he subsequently ended up moving on loan to Crystal Palace to act as backup to Dean Henderson.
During the last international break, there was some suggestion that Matt Turner might be set to lose his status as the USMNT number one goalkeeper after he was dropped.
However, he was back in action last night and kept a clean sheet as the USA defeated Panama 2-0 in a friendly, with Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi scoring the goals.
NBC Sports gave him an 8/10 rating and claimed: “Big points for a fantastic second-half double save, the second stop being a world-class reaction save. Also collected a stoppage-time save and hit some very decent long passes.”
Matz Sels was lauded by Joe Hart last weekend for his efforts between the posts against Chelsea and in fairness, the club do have a steady stopper at this moment in time.
However, the club do have to enter the market for a long-term solution to the goalkeeping situation at some point during the near future.
Carlos Miguel was signed in the summer for just £4 million. It does appear that he’s considered very much a backup option, however, given that his only outing has come in the Carabao Cup.
Dean Henderson, Keylor Navas, Wayne Hennessey, Odysseas Vlachodimos and Turner have all kept goal since the Reds returned to the Premier League and it’s important that things settle down.
Sels might be a safe option for now but at 32-years-old, it doesn’t feel as though it will be too long before the club are looking to sign a long-term number one that can be depended on.
