England fans are all in agreement after witnessing the Three Lions’ dismal performance against Greece.
In what was an emotional night at Wembley, Greece came away 2-1 winners thanks to a brace from Vangelis Pavlidis. Jude Bellingham was the scorer for England.
This was Lee Carsley’s first defeat since replacing Gareth Southgate as England’s interim manager.
The 50-year-old tenure started brilliantly after winning against the Republic of Ireland and Finland last month, but questions will now be asked on the back of the dismal display against Greece.
Reacting on social media, fans all made the same point regarding former boss Southgate.
One fan said: “I’m starting to think the coach that got this team to the final of the Euros maybe didn’t do a terrible job.”
Another tweeted: “If I was Southgate I would be sat at home laughing my head off. Players in interviews throwing him under the bus saying they should be playing
“Armchair managers saying ‘finally this is what we wanted’. We’ve just lost 2-1 at home against Greece! Could have been FOUR!”
A third fan added: “Yeah weirdly actually guys maybe Southgate constantly beating worse teams than us was, like, actually quite impressive? Who knew?”
Someone else wrote: “Bit of a wake-up call tonight for all those who seemed to think that once Gareth Southgate was gone, England were going to automatically win the next World Cup and the next European Championship. Maybe Southgate wasn’t the problem.”
A fifth commented: “This is the kind of team all the armchair generals were always screaming at Southgate for not picking. All the superstar attacking players on the pitch at once.
“It looks sh*t: unstructured, unbalanced, generally all over the shop. Southgate knew what he was doing.”
After the match, England captain on the night, John Stones said: “We prepared like we normally do and it didn’t come off. From the start they put us right under pressure. They were very compact.
“We know the system as players and when we are out there as players we we have to deliver. The onus is on us to deliver – and we didn’t.”
He added: “A difficult night, a lot was riding on it for me personally and we saw it as a great opportunity to top the group. We have to move forward.”
