Michael Brown believes Edson Alvarez getting sent off was “disappointing” as West Ham were smashed 5-1 against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Hammers crashed out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday 25 September, with Alvarez coming under the radar yet again.
West Ham took the lead through an own goal from Jarell Quansah but collapsed afterwards with Diogo Jota taking centre-stage with two goals.
Speaking on the BBC Football News Show on 27 September, Brown admitted that the Irons are not as aggressive as Julen Lopetegui would like with pressure mounting.
“Getting beat 5-1 by Liverpool is not a true reflection of them. Early on in the game, they had several chances. Even into the second half when they were 2-1 down, there were a couple of good opportunities,” he said.
“But what was disappointing, is that they went down to 10 men with Alvarez having the second yellow card and then it was capitulation. That is what the manager did not need.“They did not seem to have the gritty style what West Ham have had. Julen Lopetegui wants to be more attractive, more aggressive, at the top of the pitch and that is not coming to light at this moment in time.“There is a lot of work to do and the pressure is mounting. West Ham fans wanted the change [of manager] but it is going to take him a little bit of time.”West Ham United need a win
The Hammers haven’t had the worst of seasons compared to some of their Premier League rivals but they have performed well below what was expected of them.
Lopetegui had an intriguing summer window that seemed to reinforce all the key areas within his squad.
The likes of £34million man Jean Clair-Todibo arrived [Florian Plettenberg, 9 August] alongside players such as Crysencio Summerville.
On paper, these names seem to be strong additions to the ranks but for some reason, the Spaniard hasn’t fully integrated all his new transfers into his first-team fold as of yet.
West Ham need a win to try and get them back onto their feet, otherwise, the pressure mounting upon Lopetegui could become too much and result in a premature end to his tenure [Fabrizio Romano, 26 September].It’s still early days of course but if things continue as they are now, it doesn’t feel like much is going to change and many fans will likely regret wishing for David Moyes to exit.
