Ange Postecoglou has shut down speculation suggesting he could swap Tottenham Hotspur for the England job.
Following Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down as England manager in the wake of the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, Postecoglou found himself touted as a potential replacement by the media, with FA technical director John McDermott a known long-term admirer.
However, Postecoglou wasted little time in reaffirming his commitment to his current employers.
“Mate, I was having a nap this afternoon so I’ve got no idea,” he told the media after Spurs’ 5-1 friendly victory over Hearts.
“I’m Tottenham manager and I’m determined to bring success to this club, as I have at every other club I’ve been at. That’s where my focus is totally.”
Postecoglou is no stranger to international football. Having done most of his coaching training in Australia’s youth setup, he was given the chance to lead the senior side in 2013.
It was during this role that Postecoglou first began to attract global interest. They impressed despite elimination from a difficult group at the 2014 World Cup that also included Spain and the Netherlands, and he also led the Socceroos to qualification for the 2018 tournament before announcing his resignation.
Postecoglou cited the mental fatigue of managing a country as a reason for his departure and returned to club football with Yokohama F. Marinos.
