World-class’ Euro 2024 striker has been told to join Tottenham by former Premier League manager
Following the conclusion of the Euros, Tottenham Hotspur are now expected to step up their summer spending, adding to Archie Gray’s promising arrival at the club.
Early in the summer it was expected that Ange Postecoglou would welcome the signing of a new defensive midfielder and versatile wide forward primarily.
Leeds United’s Gray has solved one of those searches, but Spurs’ window hereafter is likely to be conducted on an ad hoc basis.
Should AC Milan agree a deal to sign Emerson Royal, Tottenham are expected to sign a better-suited right-back for example.
Dick Advocaat thinks Tottenham are the perfect club for free-agent Memphis Depay
With a forward already on the shortlist, former Premier League manager Dick Advocaat, who was in charge of Sunderland in 2015, has now urged free agent Memphis Depay to join Spurs.
Depay impressed at Euro 2024 with some ‘world class’ performances for the Netherlands, who were eventually knocked out by England.
Similarly, if Richarlison leaves Tottenham, the north Londoners may even welcome a couple of offensive signings to boost numbers ahead of their return to European football.
A host of players could leave Spurs, including the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon – all deemed surplus to requirements.
In truth, if Tottenham are able to find buyers for all the names mentioned, it could be a rather exciting summer.
And having made 31 appearances for Atletico Madrid last season, 30-year-old Depay is now a free agent after deciding to leave.
Advocaat, who knows his compatriot Depay very well, has been discussing the forward’s future on Dutch show Vandaag Inside Oranje.
And after delivering a sly-shot at Liverpool, perhaps in regards to Cody Gakpo’s struggles at the club, Advocaat declared that he thinks Depay would be a great fit for Tottenham.
He said: “If Memphis just goes to a good club, and we’re not talking about Liverpool, then he’s just an excellent striker.”
Advocaat was then specifically asked to name a club to which he replied: “Spurs.”
colleagues in the studio disagreed with that view, expressing that Depay wouldn’t be able to keep up with the ‘pace’ at Tottenham.
And to that end, there was another suggestion that the former Manchester United striker would be better off heading to Saudi Arabia.
Either way, it’s an interesting option for Tottenham to explore, someone who would at least fit the positional profile that Postecoglou is after.

Raphael van der Vaart launched an astonishing attack on an England star following their crushing defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.
Spain beat England 2-1 to win the European Championship.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored a late winner as England fans on social media all made the same complaint following the final whistle.
After the result, Van der Vaart shared his thoughts on the clash between Spain and England, and he pulled no punches
He savagely took aim at Declan Rice, calling him ‘useless’ in a stinging attack on Dutch television.
“€100M for Declan Rice. What does he do? He comes to collect a ball only to pass it back to John Stones. He is useless,” he exclaimed. “If you are truly worth €100M, then you should be able to play a ball forward.”
The Arsenal man, who was a key player under Mikel Arteta last season, started every game for England at Euro 2024.
Van der Vaart also touched on Jude Bellingham, who set up Cole Palmer’s equalising goal.
The former Premier League star questioned whether he can operate as a No.10.
On Bellingham, he said: “Jude Bellingham is not someone who’s there for the smooth touches, he’s just a strong lad who keeps going 90 minutes long. The number 10 on his back is debatable.
Sure, he can wear a number 10, but for me he is not a number 10.”
England fans are not happy with the performance of one of their players as they lost the Euro 2024 final.
Despite finding an equaliser late in the game through Cole Palmer, England lost their second successive European Championship final on Sunday as Spain defeated them 2-1.
An 86th minute winner from substitute Mikel Oyarzabal won the match for Luis de la Fuente and sealed a seventh successive tournament win for Spain.
And England fans have placed the blame on right-back Kyle Walker, holding him accountable for both of Spain’s goals.
One fan pointed out Walker’s poor performance, writing on X: “Kyle walker responsible for both Spanish goals. You cannot write this script.”
Popular online football personality Mark Goldbridge added: “Don’t ever tell me Kyle Walker isn’t just pace. Both goals on him”
While another criticised the defender for his performances in the entire tournament, writing: “From absolutely nothing. Walker has been a disaster all game – all tournament.”
The Manchester City defender was responsible for marking left-winger Nico Williams during the match, but failed to stop the 22-year-old from opening the scoring in the match as he put Spain ahead early in the second half.
Walker was also failed to stop Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella from making a pass to Oyarzabal late in the match, who calmly found the back of the net and won the tournament for his tournament.
