Tottenham are unlikely to complete a move to Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, with the club looking at younger options in their search for a striker.
Spurs have been linked with an interest in the England man this summer, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank admitting that the club could cash in on the player. Toney has one year remaining on his current contract with the Bees.
He is currently representing England at Euro 2024 in Germany but is yet to make an appearance in the competition. The striker was an unused substitute for both group games against Serbia and Denmark, he will be hoping to make it on the pitch when the Three Lions take on Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday night.
There has been much talk over his future while he has been on international duty. Spurs have been heavily linked amid talk of a deal around the £50 million mark.
However, as reported by football.london the shortlist of forwards compiled by Tottenham for the striker position contains targets for both the present and the future and are aged in their mid-twenties or younger. At the age of 28, Toney doesn’t fall within those parameters, meaning a move for the Brentford man is unlikely this summer.
Instead, Lille’s Jonathan David is high on the shortlist, after scoring 26 goals in 47 matches for the French club last season. Spurs continue to be linked with several other strikers.
Speaking ahead of the game against Slovenia, Toney said that his full concentration was on the Euros before sorting his future. “I can’t predict the future and if I could I wouldn’t be sat here in front of you guys,” he said. “What will be will be and my main focus is playing well and doing well for my country.
I’ve been through it (transfer speculation) before. There’s been lots of talk of me going here, there and everywhere before in my career and I just don’t let outside noise get to me.
“I’m here with England now, and the main focus is doing well for England and whatever happens, happens. I can’t control it.”
Alan Hutton believes that Ivan Toney would take Tottenham to the next level if they signed the England striker this summer.
Spurs are looking for new attacking players to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad for the busy coming Premier League season, which also brings with it the return of European football with the Europa League, as well as fixtures in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup for the Australian.
Since Harry Kane’s departure last summer, Tottenham have been linked with a number of strikers, including Brentford’s Toney, Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke and Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez. Former Spurs right-back and Scotland international Hutton believes that England international Toney is the one for the job.
“I think if Spurs want to properly kick on next season and challenge for the top four, they need to get a striker. Ivan Toney would be my top choice. I know people have mentioned the likes of Dominic Solanke but I think Toney gives you that something different – it feels like he plays as if he’s bulletproof,” Hutton told Best Online Poker Sites.
“Having lost Harry Kane, if they went and got Toney this summer, he’d be the one to take them to the next level. I think with regards to the rest of the positions, Ange Postecoglou should just be looking at strengthening the squad, a backup left back for example – although Destiny Udogie has been brilliant. There are just spots within the squad that need beefing out a little bit.”
One Argentinean media outlet also claimed that Real Madrid are interested in signing Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero, although the north London club have since distanced themselves any potential transfer.
