England coach Gareth Southgate will be sweating over Kieran Trippier’s fitness ahead of Euro 2024 after seeing the Newcastle defender sent off with an apparent injury in their unusual post-season friendly
club with Tottenham
Southgate announced his 33-man preliminary squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday ahead of England’s upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina – their final warm-ups for this summer’s tournament in Virtue
Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling have all been left out of the squad by Southgate, who will announce their final 26-man squad for the tournament on June 8
The English coach has the embarrassment of being rich in attack but lacking in strength
Drop deep in defense, especially at the left-back position
Luke Shaw has been included in the preliminary squad despite being currently sidelined through injury and is the only professional left-back called up by Southgate, with Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell left out
Trippier was included, partly due to his ability to play at both left-back and right-back, as was Liverpool defender Joe Gomez – who was also called up
However, Southgate now faces the risk of being dropped after seeing Trippier eliminated by Newcastle in their friendly against Tottenham in Australia

The former Spurs defender was spotted using an ice pack on the bench after leaving the field at half-time in their unusual postseason match
“Trippier went to pick up [Jacob] Murphy
It seemed like it was planned, but Trippier is currently applying ice around his ankle and sitting on a bench,” Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder posted on X
The decision to stage the match in Australia proved unpopular with both clubs’ English fans, especially as it took place just days after the final day of the Premier League season
Southgate will also be unimpressed with how the match turned out, with England international James Maddison also involved
Southgate hopes Trippier’s injury is not serious and he can feature in their upcoming Euro warm-up matches
England will face Iceland in a friendly on June 3 before facing Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 7
They will face Serbia in their Euro opener on June 16 before further group stage matches against Denmark (June 20) and Slovenia (June 25)
