West Ham United: Ex-Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha move rejected by David Moyes

West Ham considered a move for Wilfried Zaha in January but David Moyes didn’t think he would improve the West Ham squad, according to The Guardian.

Jacob Steinberg reported via the paper’s website on 20 April that the former Crystal Palace star, now at Galatasaray, was looked at as a potential loan option in January but “it is understood Moyes did not feel any potential signings would have lifted the squad’s level”.

The Scot, whose future is in doubt as he look likely to depart summer, only signed Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City in the winter window, but the midfielder has been a “disaster”, while attacking back-ups Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma were allowed to leave without replacement.

Moyes seems to hope he will extend his contract extension the London Stadium but he hasn’t done his chances any favours with the January window.

When his recent record of failing to make the most of high profile additions to the squad is part of the case against him it clearly hasn’t helped his case by pushing for Phillips, against resistance within the club in an area where West Ham were relatively well stocked, and has been burned for it as the ex-Leeds United favourite has had a nightmare time.

A lack of attacking options was already an issue heading to the New Year so it seems to forgone Conclusions That the proble will be addresesd especially once late exits came up for Fornals and Benrahma.

Zaha may not be the dynamic force that he was a few years ago but he would surely have been of more use by now than Phillips was going to be even if things worked out better for the latter.

West Ham went out of Europe against Bayer Leverkusen despite putting up a strong fight, but didn’t have much to turn to when chasing the game late on, with just the lesser-spotted Maxwel Cornet and Exit- bound back-up defender Ben Johnson brought on late in attack.

It is sometimes hard to understand Moyes’ thought-processes when it comes to personnel choices, and this feels like one of those instances.
