Paul Merson disagreed with Ange Postecoglou’s decision to select Brennan Johnson over Dejan Kulusevski against Everton, insisting that the Welshman is not ready to be a starter for Tottenham.
It is fair to say that Johnson has not set the world alight in his first six months at Spurs since his big-money switch from Nottingham Forest last summer.
The winger’s talent is three for all to see, with the youngster showing several glimpses of the kind of ability and work-rate that convinced Ange Postecoglou to bring him to the club.
The 22-year-old has showcased his electric pace, his impressive crossing ability as well as his usefulness in counter-pressing but he is yet to string a few consistent performances together to signal that he has well and truly arrived at the club.
Should Brennan Johnson be starting for Spurs?
Merson is of the opinion that Johnson should primarily be used as an impact substitute by Postecoglou for the moment rather than as a starter.
“Kulusevski is not playing today. I don’t agree with that one. I wouldn’t have played Johnson. I know he scored, but I think Johnson is an impact player at the moment. I don’t think he is a player that starts for Tottenham.”

We have seen time and again that some players can take longer to get adjusted to new surroundings after switching clubs. For example, Richarlison was written off by large swaths of the fan base and is now showing exactly why Spurs paid such a big fee for him.
Johnson is much younger and less experienced than the Brazilian and he deserves time and patience. We might not see the best of the winger until next season but there is no doubt that he has the talent to evolve into a top player.
