Spurs’ first confirmed signing of the January transfer window was a forward with Ange Postecoglou being provided with some cover after Son Heung-min departed for the Asia Cup.
The club officially announced this week (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 9 January) that they had signed RB Leipzig forward Werner on a six-month loan deal.
Tottenham will have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer for a fee of £15.5million (Football London, 9 January).
With this fee in mind, Wenham believes the deal will prove to be a positive one for Spurs.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “That signing is a complete no-brainer if you ask me.
“He is somebody that offers pace and the ability to play in all three of the forward positions, which is something that we know Postecoglou likes.
“The buy option is incredibly low, and I don’t see what Red Bull Leipzig get out of this deal.
“If he is a huge success at Tottenham, we could snap him up for £15.5million, which is fantastic value for a 27-year-old Germany international with 54 caps.
“He is a Champions League winner, he is already experienced in England, and he seems like a genuine person as well. From the interviews I have seen of him across the club’s channels, he looks like someone who is buzzing to be at the club and seems to feel honoured to play for Tottenham.
“There have never been any issues around his attitude, he just needs to get his confidence back.
“I think when Maddison comes back, those two could form a strong understanding. Maddison can play those balls over the top and Werner can use his lightning pace to get in behind, and that will be a really dangerous option for Tottenham.”
