Paul Robinson believes Hugo Lloris’ Tottenham career shouldn’t come to an end as it currently is where the Frenchman has “disappeared into the background”.
The BBC Sport pundit feels it is possible that the 37-year-old could even have his contract cancelled in order for him to move on elsewhere and play, having not featured once for the club this season after being left out of the pre-season tour and losing the captain’s armband.
Robinson admits that new starter Guglielmo Vicario has been “outstanding” since his summer arrival but wants a better send off for the 444-appearance World Cup winner after his years of service, although he hasn’t ruled out an imminent departure.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “There could be an agreement between club and player that the contract was cancelled to allow him to move onto pastures new.
“For me personally it would be disappointing for him to leave the club in that way because of what a fantastic servant he’s been to the club.
“Father time catches up with everybody and a manager comes into the club and your face doesn’t fit, or whatever it is, and your lifespan comes to an end.
“It looks that it has for Hugo. He’s been susceptible for a few mistakes in the last two or three seasons.
“And the way Vicario’s come in and taken the gloves, he’s been outstanding.
“So yes Hugo’s time at Tottenham as a number one is looking like it’s over. As far as how he leaves the club I think he deserves a lot better than the way that he’s kind of just disappeared into the background at the moment.
“I’m not saying that I’d love to see him in a Spurs shirt again but some kind of send-off and him leaving the club in a good way.
“Whenever he returns in the future, whether that be in a playing, coaching, or spectator capacity, I’m sure he’ll be welcomed back to the club with open arms and very fond memories for the servant that he’s been to the club.“
