Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer disagreed with Sean Dyche as he raged at his side’s disallowed goal in Everton versus Tottenham but could see both sides.

It was one of the most contentious decisions in Saturday’s games. Both former England strikers were quick to agree with VAR’s overturning of the goal but could understand why the Everton boss was up in arms.

“Sean Dyche was very unhappy with the goal that was annulled by VAR but… it is a foul,” Lineker said on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday (23 December).

Shearer added: “The referee and assistant referee didn’t think it was a foul so I totally understand what Sean [Dyche] is saying. It probably is a foul, but is it a howler?”

Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal represented a turning in the point in a hard-fought tie against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side.

At 2-1 down, the match was opened up as Everton grew into the match. But with the striker’s goal taken away due to Gomes’ foul, the Toffees had to wait until the 82nd minute for Gomes to fire home to make it 2-1 again. It stood this time

Arnaut Danjuma had the chance to equalise in the dying seconds but saw his effort inches from going over the goal line after smashing the underside of the bar. However, it was not to be for Everton as they last their first game in six outings.

Despite only claiming 39 per cent of possession throughout the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Everton seemed to dominate in front of goal, boasting 18 shots to Spurs’ 13 and eight shots on target to Spurs’ six. [FotMob]

Their 1.78 xG compared to the home side’s 1.48 xG would suggest Everton probably should have scored more than Spurs, if not for Guglielmo Vicario who made seven saves.
