Ben Davies is now the second longest-serving member of the Tottenham squad, having joined in 2013 (only Hugo Lloris has now been at the club longer).
The 30-year-old is just as dependable as ever, and has once again found himself at the heart of the Lilywhites defence this season due to the injury sustained by Micky van de Ven at the start of last month.
Davies has now started the last five matches for Spurs, playing the full 90 minutes in each of those games (Transfermarkt). He has proved a reliable figure next to vice-captain Cristian Romero, and excelled at the weekend against Newcastle United.
Indeed, it was Davies who put in a crucial interception early on to prevent Newcastle taking the lead. Spurs would ultimately go on to win the game 4-1.
Ange Postecoglou is a fan of Ben Davies
While Davies’ recent run of appearances is largely down to van de Ven being unavailable, but he has made the most of his opportunity and is impressing his manager, Ange Postecoglou. He’s also impressing Alasdair Gold, too, it seems.
Gold said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “I thought Ben Davies played very well again, he definitely looks so much more comfortable understandably alongside a natural centre-back and Postecoglou loves Ben Davies.
“He was talking even after the game about he’s essentially had to turn Ben Davies into a centre-back this season. He’s just kind of come in, no fuss, done what he’s had to do, as Ben Davies said he’s played with loads of different people in the role.
“He’s played with Dier, Emerson, Van de Ven briefly, obviously Romero back now, he’s never had a settled partner. We’ll have to see what happens with Van de Ven, it could potentially be mid to late January that he’s back if he remains on track.
“Romero and Davies – as long as Romero doesn’t get another red card or this fifth yellow card because he’s now on four – then they might get a little together as a partnership.”
I was a little bit disappointed with Davies in the West Ham game – I thought he made a couple of mistakes and looked off the pace – but he more than made up for it against Newcastle. He’s such a reliable head in the squad, and he should see us through to January nicely.
