‘Pains me to say’… Kieran Gibbs says he’s been so impressed by one Tottenham man this season

Kieran Gibbs has issued his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou after Spurs lost their third game in a row at the weekend.

Gibbs was speaking on ESPN after Tottenham threw away a lead once again, with Aston Villa coming from behind to win 2-1 on Sunday.

Tottenham’s critics will insist that Ange Postecoglou needs to change his style. However, there do not appear to be many Spurs fans who are too alarmed about their current form.

Kieran Gibbs issues his verdict on Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham left the pitch to quite the ovation after losing 4-1 to Chelsea. And there has been little discontent from the stands.

That is because Postecoglou has taken absolutely no time at all to capture the imagination of supporters. Of course, it is easy to forget now the disarray the club appeared to be in during the final months of last season.

Tottenham have since lost arguably the greatest player in their entire history in Harry Kane. And yet, they led the way for much of the early part of the campaign.

And Kieran Gibbs believes that the Spurs boss deserves huge credit for the work that he has done.

“As much as it pains me to say it, I’ve actually been really impressed with Spurs, really impressed. To lose Harry Kane and to perform how they have so far this season is super impressive. You have to give him credit,” he told ESPN.

“Spurs are a team that are just going to cause the other top teams challenging for the title, problems. They make the league more exciting this year, a bit like a Newcastle. They’re going to be a bogey team for the teams that are challenging for the title.

“But yeah, I’m impressed. They’re playing good football. We don’t associate Tottenham with that style of football at all. He’s been a breath of fresh air since coming in and credit to him.”

Injuries have had massive impact on Tottenham

Injuries have struck Tottenham in an awful way in recent weeks. James Maddison is not expected to return before the turn of the year. And Micky van de Ven is also sidelined.

Maddison has arguably been the best player in the division. And van de Ven has been a revelation, allowing Tottenham to play such a high line because of his frightening pace.

So losing both players at the same time has definitely had Tottenham hard. But Postecoglou has not deviated from his principles. And actually, Spurs have managed to get their fair share of punches in during this current run.
