‘Slept on’… Pundit says Tottenham may have a James Maddison replacement nobody is paying attention to

It’s been quite the week for Tottenham Hotspur.

The north London club lost 4-1 to Chelsea on Monday, but that heavy defeat may not even be the worst thing to happen to Spurs this week.

Indeed, suspensions for Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero are huge blows for Spurs, while Micky Van de Ven has also gone down with injury.

However, perhaps the biggest blow Spurshave suffered this week has been regarding James Maddison.

The attacking midfielder has been ruled out until the new year, and that leaves a huge void in this Spurs side.

However, speaking on Premier League Productions, Nedum Onuoha has claimed that Spurs may have an underestimated Maddison replacement in the shape of Rodrigo Bentancur.

Bentancur could replace Maddison

Onuoha shared his verdict on the Uruguyan.

“It is a big list and these are people who have done very well for the team this season, but they do have players who want to come in and make a difference. The big one that is slept on is the return of Bentancur, he is someone that will thrive in this Postecoglou system, so that may give him the chance to break into the side because as well as Maddison and Son were playing, maybe he’s now likely to get more minutes,” Onuoha said.

“Do you think he’ll play him in the 10 where Maddison plays?” Onuoha said.

“I think he might, I genuinely think he might, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they approach it,” Onuoha concluded.

Not the same

As much as we love Bentancur as a player, it’s hard to put him in that same bracket as Maddison.

He’s a fantastic midfielder, but he doesn’t have that eye for a pass that Maddison does, and he’s not as much of a goal threat.

Factor in that Bentancur has only just come back from a long-term injury, and you have to say that it’s a big risk for Spurs to use a player who has been out of action for so long in a role that is so important to the way they play.
