‘Mad man’: Joey Barton blasts 25-year-old Tottenham player after seeing what he did last night

Joey Barton has called Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero a ‘mad man’ after his red card against Chelsea last night.

Spurs were in the driving seat to beat Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea, but a moment of madness from Romero cost them the game. Even Barton, who knows a thing or two about getting red cards, wasn’t pleased with the Argentine’s challenge.

Joe Barton calls Tottenham’s Cristian Romero a ‘mad man’

Cristian Romero has always had a reputation for being reckless, but we really thought he had changed following Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at Tottenham.

The Argentine has been brilliant for Spurs this season. He has formed a tremendous partnership with Micky van de Ven, and up until last night, he had barely put a foot wrong.

However, against Chelsea yesterday, Romero seemed like he just wanted to be sent off. He got lucky when his needless kick-out at Levi Colwill wasn’t punished, but instead of being careful from that point, he chose to do something worse.

Romero committed a dangerous challenge on his compatriot Enzo Fernandez inside the box. It was a painful one for the midfielder, but the referee didn’t give anything in real-time.

Just as it seemed like Romero would get away with it again, VAR advised Michael Oliver to have another look at it, and the referee decided to award a penalty and send the Tottenham vice-captain off.
