Newcastle United’s next fixture is a Champions League clash with AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night. That is difficult to believe given where we were exactly two years ago.
But the change of ownership and Eddie Howe‘s arrival have given Newcastle a miracle, and the Toon Army are off to Italy.
Internally, there is an acceptance that this season will be tougher than the last, so it is vital that fans and players enjoy these special moments. That is exactly what Tuesday night will be – special.
However, it will not just be a day out for Howe. He will take his side to the San Siro with a plan to win against AC Milan, and he is already plotting two changes to his starting lineup.
Tonali and Isak to start for Newcastle against AC Milan
According to the Telegraph, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali are set to start against AC Milan on Tuesday evening.
Both players were on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Brentford – a vital victory after three consecutive defeats.
The Magpies won without their two most expensive players ever, with neither Isak or Tonali being brought on by Howe. They were preserved, and are now expected to start at the San Siro – something Tonali has done plenty of times before.
It shows Newcastle’s sudden depth that Howe can bring in two players worth a combined £118million. They should be fresh for the Champions League opener after being rested at the weekend.
Howe’s decision to go with Isak sounds like it will be bad news for Callum Wilson, who was Newcastle’s match-winner against Brentford. However, his man of the match performance does not look like it will be enough to start on Tuesday night.
As for Tonali, he will almost certainly replace one of Sean Longstaff or Elliot Anderson. The latter feels much more likely, despite a decent showing against Brentford.
