Spur are never going to go in that direction to sign an experienced player as Romano says Tottenham were never signing 31-goal striker

Fabrizio Romano insists Tottenham Hotspur ‘were never going’ to sign Porto striker Mehdi Taremi when Harry Kane left the Premier League for Bayern Munich. 

Spurs might not have struck a deal to bring in either Gift Orban or Elye Wahi before the transfer window closed on September 1^st. But their pursuit of two of Europe’s most exciting up-and-coming forwards – holding talks with the former while seeing their interest in the latter confirmed by Montpellier’s president – offered an insight into Tottenham’s plans post-Harry Kane.
At 21, both Orban and Wahi are a decade Mehdi Taremi’s junior.

And while some suggested that Porto’s experienced Iran international was one of Tottenham’s leading targets during the final few weeks of the summer –Gianluca di Marzio reporting that Spurs were prepared to stump up around £20 million – Romano insists that Ange Postecoglou’s side were always on the lookout for younger options.

“Ok, you lost Harry Kane, but you’re going in a different direction. I was surprised when I saw some rumours after the Harry Kane deal with Bayern linking, for example, Taremi to Tottenham,” Romano explains on his Here We Go podcast.

“They were never going to go in that direction to sign an experienced player. I know he’s a very good player, but they’re going in a different direction.

“They want young players with potential and to work on a different kind of project.”

Taremi scored 31 goals in all competitions last season. He remains at Porto after a deadline-day move to AC Milan failed to materialise. Tottenham, meanwhile, eventually stumped up nearly £50 million for the versatile Brennan Johnson, while also investing in Argentine teenager Alejo Veliz.
