Exclusive! Captain Heung-min Son opens up on Teammate performance and preferred position

When asked about Richarlison’s contributions to the Tottenham Hotspur team, Heung-min Son defended his teammate and insisted that he does not need to replace the Brazilian up front for Spurs.

In the wake of Harry Kane‘s departure to Bayern Munich, everyone seems to want to know how the club will replace its talismanic striker.

The North London side do now have around £100m to spend thanks to the transfer (Sky Sports) but it is unclear how they plan to fill the gap left behind by the England captain.

So far this season it has been down to Richarlison to step up and lead the line for Spurs. The 26-year-old has worked hard in the two games he has played this term, but has failed to find the back of the net.

Richarlison is, of course, looking to bounce back from a particularly disappointing campaign last year, where he only managed three goals all season for Spurs (Transfermarkt) and had to wait until April for his first league goal for the Lilywhites.

Son isn’t concerned about where he plays for Spurs

Speaking to Sky Sports (19/08/2023 at 7:15 pm) after the win over Manchester United on Saturday, Heung-min Son was asked about his own position in the line-up and whether he would prefer to occupy Richarlison’s role, but the Spurs captain insisted everyone is doing their job as instructed.

He said: “I think I can play any position, to be honest, left and right, in the middle. But I think Richy played really, really well. He held the ball. But for me, I’ll still get in positions.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Richarlison may not be troubling the goalkeepers so far this season, but his work ethic and determination on the field are really helpful to the team’s efforts.

His goals will come in time, but as long as he is working hard, supporting the attacking system, and following Ange Postecoglou’s instructions, it really shouldn’t matter how many goals he scores.
