The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has revealed that Hugo Lloris would be Lazio’s number two if he joins the club, which is why the Frenchman is having doubts about moving to the Italian side.
We relayed a report from Gianluca Di Marzio on Wednesday morning, which suggested that Lloris was in talks with Lazio over a two-year contract after Tottenham agreed to terminate the year left in the Frenchman’s contract.
The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick subsequently suggested yesterday that while Lazio do want to sign the 36-year-old on a free transfer, Spurs do not want to terminate his contract and are looking for a small transfer fee for their former captain.
Lloris has a decision to make about Tottenham exit
In his latest column in The Athletic, Eccleshare has now backed up Kilpatrick’s claim about Tottenham wanting a transfer fee for Lloris, and he also adds that the goalkeeper himself is not sold on the move to the Stadio Olimpico.
This is because the former Lyon man has privately said that he does not want to be anyone’s understudy, but that is exactly what he will be at Lazio, who boast last season’s Serie A goalkeeper of the year, Ivan Provedel.
Eccleshare explains that since Lloris does not have a lot of other options, he might have to decide between staying on as a number two in Europe or moving to Saudi Arabia this summer.

I am surprised that Lloris has not attracted more interest from Ligue 1 this summer, given that he was Les Blues captain until about six months ago.
The goalkeeper would have likely anticipated that a few French clubs would have come in for him, which is perhaps why he declared that he does not want to stay on at Tottenham as the club’s number two.
