For a long time it looked like Kieran Tierney would be the answer to Newcastle United’s left-back problem, but now the Magpies appear to be scouting out alternatives to the Arsenal ace.
Tierney is a long-term target for the Magpies, and it was even reported that he was expected to sign for Eddie Howe’s side this summer, with Newcastle confident about doing a deal with the Gunners.
However, the speculation surrounding the Scotland international has become much more negative in recent weeks. Newcastle reportedly do not want to pay Arsenal’s asking price of £30million, while it has also been claimed that Mikel Arteta could now convince him to stay at the Emirates.
That could force Newcastle to look elsewhere for a left-back, and a new report suggests they could turn to someone else currently playing in London.
Newcastle eye Fulham defender Antonee Robinson
According to the Chronicle, Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson is someone who Newcastle are interested in signing this summer.
The USA international was linked with a move to St James’ Park last year ahead of the January transfer window, but remained at Craven Cottage.
Now he is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Fulham, leading to speculation that he could be sold this summer if he does not sign a new deal.
The Chronicle add that Robinson would be available for less than £30million, meaning he would be a cheaper option than Tierney.
However, unlike Tierney, Robinson would not feel like an upgrade on what we already have. While the 25-year-old is a talented player, is he any better than Dan Burn or Matt Targett?
If we are going to sign a left-back this summer, it needs to be someone who could walk straight into the starting XI. Tierney could, but it is difficult to say the same about Robinson.
