Tottenham Hotspur have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba this summer.
Arsenal now face a battle with rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen.
That is according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who has taken to Twitter to claim that interest in Tapsoba is mounting.
Romano claims that a number of Premier League clubs are now tracking Tapsoba ahead of the summer window.
Romano adds that Arsenal and Tottenham have both scouted Tapsoba in recent Leverkusen games.
The race is ‘absolutely open’ for Tapsoba though according to Romano, who claims that Leverkusen would only sell for ‘huge’ money.
Leverkusen will face major interest in the likes of Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz this summer but clearly want to keep Tapsoba.
Tottenham move makes more sense for Edmond Tapsoba
Arsenal do need another right-footed centre back this summer.
Rob Holding looks set to leave Arsenal this summer and more quality competition is needed for William Saliba.
However, Tapsoba will cost huge money this summer and the potential fee would be a lot to spend on competition.
Add in that Tapsoba would expect a starting role with his next move and Arsenal may not make sense for him.
Tottenham do need defensive help though and big money must be spent on new centre backs.
Cristian Romero has quality and potential but Davinson Sanchez looks set to leave and Clement Lenglet is only on loan.
Tapsoba is a huge presence at 6ft 4in tall and possesses impressive speed, factors that could make him a strong partner for Romero.
One issue may be that Tottenham could appoint Arne Slot, who likes to use a right and a left-footed partnership at the back.
Left-footed defenders Marcos Senesi and David Hancko have excelled under Slot and he would surely want a similar player at Spurs.
Tapsoba is a right-footer like Romero though and it may mean Slot has to slightly tweak how he builds from the back.
Hailed as a ‘fantastic’ player by Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes, Tapsoba could end up in North London – but which side of it remains unknown.
