Tottenham have a “history” of signing young talent and giving them first-team opportunities that stretches back years, says Paul Robinson.
The former Spurs goalkeeper reacted to the club’s links to sensations at Norwich City and Leeds United admitting from experience that the club have a track record of such pursuits
Football London reported on 16 January that the club had been keeping a “close eye” on the Canaries “wonderkid” Jonathan Rowe, 20, while the Daily Mail had tabbed the 17-year-old Elland Road midfielder Archie Gray as a Spurs target on 31 December.
Robinson expects both players to be playing for one of the top Premier League sides sooner or later after big-money moves, and suggests that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is as likely as any destination.
He exclusively told Tottenham News on Rowe: “Yeah he’s in a similar sort of mould to Archie Gray, that type of young, quality player that will command a big transfer fee from one of the big Premier League clubs or a club around Europe at some point.
“But Spurs have a history of doing that, even back to when I played, bringing in young talent, nurturing them and giving them an opportunity in the first team, or out on loan and then slowly bringing them into the first team.
“Tottenham are very, very good at that with their recruitment, and they’re not afraid of paying a price for a younger player to take the chance on them when others would be.
“But I think the money now in the Premier League and the scouting networks means there will be a lot of players around that type of level with a lot of clubs looking at them.
“It’s all about who’s first to the table and players of that quality will have the pick of where they want to go.
“Like I say, Tottenham have done it before with a lot of younger players.”
