Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be interested in re-signing Sporting winger Marcus Edwards but face a battle with Chelsea.
Sporting wide man Marcus Edwards is a target for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the January transfer window.
That is according to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, who claim that Edwards is wanted by Tottenham and Chelsea.
Some Tottenham fans will remember Edwards being compared to Lionel Messi by then-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Edwards couldn’t live up to that billing at Spurs and Pochettino then sold Edwards to Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2019.
Marcus Edwards wanted back at Tottenham Hotspur
Edwards has rebuilt his reputation in Portugal, earning himself a 2022 move to Sporting.
The 24-year-old impressed against Tottenham in the Champions League last season, sending a reminder of his quality.
Tottenham seem to have kept tabs on Edwards with Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha now claiming that Spurs are keen.
It’s stated that Chelsea are also interested having seen Edwards bag two goals and three assists this season.
Hailed as ‘ridiculous’ by Rio Ferdinand because of his dribbling ability, Edwards could be viewed as competition for Dejan Kulusevski down Tottenham’s right flank.
Edwards’ technical style would surely appeal to Ange Postecoglou, so maybe the time is right for a Spurs return.
Chelsea link makes no sense
Chelsea have just spent on a left-footed, English winger in Cole Palmer.
Palmer has been hugely impressive so far and looks almost undroppable right now.
Chelsea also splashed out on another former Spurs youngster in Noni Madueke earlier this year.
Madueke is yet another in that mould; an English winger who wants to play on the right flank and cut inside onto his left foot.
Adding another in Edwards just wouldn’t add up for Chelsea unless Madueke is on his way out, and that may just leave Tottenham in the lead.
