Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United career is hanging by a thread, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
It doesn’t appear as if any movement has been made towards offering the 33-year-old striker a new deal, despite Eddie Howe’s hints that Wilson’s future isn’t decided.
In truth, as great a player as Callum Wilson has been for Newcastle, it’s probably time to let him go after making just two starts this season and his only goal coming in the FA Cup against Birmingham.
Wilson is getting on a bit, and between his age and his frankly appalling injury record, he’s not likely to be able to keep up with the style Eddie Howe wants to play at Newcastle.
Dietmar Hamann says Wrexham should snap up Callum Wilson
Now, speaking to BettingLounge (via The Mirror) former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has suggested that Wilson would be a perfect fit for Wrexham, who have shot up the leagues into the Championship following the takeover by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
“Callum Wilson would absolutely be a great signing for Wrexham. Newcastle will probably improve their squad for next season and it will be even harder to get game time.
“For Wrexham, if they want to get promoted into the Premier League they will probably need to have a Premier League level squad given the quality of the teams at the top of the Championship.
“So they will be looking at Premier League players and we’ve seen teams do back to back promotions from League One to the Premier League in recent years, Wrexham could be a similar story.”
“A player like Callum Wilson with that experience, he will be able to keep the level up in the Championship and teach the young lads, I could see that signing being a success.”To be honest, we think this move has Callum Wilson written all over it. There’s no doubt that Wilson could still do a job in the Championship, but the exposure he’d get playing for Wrexham would suit his personality down to the ground, too.

Obviously, Ryan Reynolds might take exception to not being the sexiest man at the football club any more, but we’re sure he can deal with that. Hollywood actors don’t have fragile egos, do they?
In all seriousness, it would actually be a good move for Wilson. He could become a hero there, banging goals in every week in the Championship and mixing with the Hollywood types, it just feels so Callum Wilson.
It’ll likely never happen, but it’s a fun image nonetheless.
