3 Newcastle first-team players facing ‘uncertain’ future at club: Report
Newcastle United are expected to part ways with at least one senior midfielder this summer, with Sean Longstaff the most likely to depart, and the future of Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes “uncertain” at the very least.
Longstaff, who hasn’t started a Premier League match since mid-December, is entering the final year of his contract. While the club triggered an extension earlier this season, that decision was made primarily to retain his transfer value.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, if Newcastle receive a “decent offer,” Longstaff is likely to leave—provided he agrees to a move.
Willock and Barnes, meanwhile, are not currently being shopped, but both could be available if the right opportunity arises.
Waugh reported that Newcastle “have not been actively looking to move on either,” but added that “there is a chance one or both could leave” if serious bids come in, especially as outgoing sales will help facilitate incoming transfers.
Willock has struggled for form throughout the campaign and may be at risk of falling further down the pecking order depending on potential purchases. However, any move would depend on Longstaff’s status, as losing both midfielders could leave Newcastle short in the position.
Barnes’ situation is less clear. After a quiet stretch, a recent uptick in form has boosted the odds of him remaining on Tyneside, but there are growing rumors about a potential move happening as soon as this summer, after just two middling seasons with the Magpies.
As for Lewis Miley, Waugh reiterated that Newcastle considers the 19-year-old untouchable.
