Anthony Gordon was heavily linked with a Liverpool move back in the summer but Newcastle rejected an £80m approach for the winger, who was at Anfield during his academy days
Anthony Gordon has confessed that Liverpool released him as a kid as he laughed off their £80million attempt to buy him back in the summer.
The Newcastle star has gone from strength to strength since moving to St James’ Park from Everton. It was those on the blue half of Merseysider who gave him a chance when Liverpool decided to let him go before seeing what he would go on to become.
Gordon’s entire family are red over blue in Liverpool and the Reds had looked to land the England winger in a mega deal back in the summer. Newcastle have had to toe the line financially, often having to sell before they can actually use their financial might in the transfer market.
They were able to sell other assets which meant they could keep hold of Gordon, who scored against Liverpool in a 3-3 draw earlier this season.
He said on A League Of Their Own that he had no family connection with Everton before the Toffees swooped in when Liverpool let him go. Gordon said: “So I was at Liverpool and they released me when I was 11 and then Everton signed me.”
The winger then joked that his family, who are devoted Liverpool fans, were by no means wishing him well as he laughed off a comment about their transfer attempts. He joked: “As long as we lost they were alright, if I scored they were like ‘great, but we want you to lose’. My family are like really, really bitter Liverpool fans.”
Liverpool are not short of attacking talent but Gordon and his pace would suit their style. It remains to be seen whether Mohamed Salah will remain at Anfield beyond this season but Newcastle have now tied down their winger.
Gordon put pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle in October, and he has now told The Chronicle that he is fully committed to the Magpies’ cause.
He said: “Because the club (Newcastle) has transitioned so quickly, other fans and other media outlets just pick the players… when we play well, it’s like ‘He’s got to move from Newcastle,’ but that’s not the reality. We’re fifth in the table, we’re a top club ourselves. It’s a load of rubbish, really.
The project doesn’t really mean much to us, we all want to win now. People keep talking about the project from the outside because of how much the club has come on but that doesn’t really mean much to us.
“We’re trying to win now, we’re trying to win cups now, we’re trying to get back into the Champions League and if we do that then it’ll no longer be called a project will it because it’ll be what we want it to be.”
