Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son has candidly addressed the reason why his team struggled to put more goals past Fulham in their recent 1-1 draw. Speaking after the match, Son highlighted two key factors that hindered Spurs’ attacking output: the absence of Dominic Solanke, who was sidelined due to illness, and the lack of form from Dejan Kulusevski.
Tottenham’s only goal of the game, didn’t mince his words when explaining the frustrations his team faced in breaking down Fulham’s defense. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Spurs were unable to turn their dominance into more goals, and Son pointed to the absence of Solanke and the current struggles of Kulusevski as significant reasons for this.
The Absence of Dominic Solanke
One of the most notable absences on the day was that of new signing Dominic Solanke, who was unavailable due to illness. Solanke, who joined Spurs from Bournemouth in the summer, is known for his physicality, hold-up play, and ability to stretch defenses. His absence was keenly felt, as Spurs lacked that focal point in the attack that could have helped them convert more chances.
With Harry Kane now gone, Spurs have struggled to find a natural replacement for a player capable of not only scoring but also creating space for others. Son and Richarlison have often been deployed as the main attacking threats, but without Solanke’s presence to hold the ball up and occupy Fulham’s defenders, Spurs’ attacking play looked a little disconnected at times. Solanke’s absence left Spurs without that added dimension in their forward line, and they were unable to capitalize on their superiority.
Dejan Kulusevski’s Dip in Form
Son also pointed out that Dejan Kulusevski’s current dip in form has been another factor in Tottenham’s attacking struggles. The Swedish winger, who was instrumental in Spurs’ forward play last season, has yet to rediscover his best form this campaign. Kulusevski’s creativity and ability to link up with Son and others in the final third have been noticeably off, and his slower-than-usual build-up play against Fulham reflected this lack of sharpness.
The winger has been struggling to make an impact in recent weeks, with his final ball often lacking the precision and invention seen in his earlier performances. This dip in form has put additional pressure on Son to carry much of the attacking burden, and while the South Korean forward has been in superb individual form, the lack of sharpness from Kulusevski has left Tottenham somewhat predictable and easier to defend against
