John McGinn called for Aston Villa to keep their heads after the heavy defeat at Tottenham this afternoon.
Villa opened the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium through Morgan Rogers and were leading at the break, but the hosts turned it on after half-time. Brennan Johnson equalised in the 52nd minute before Dominic Solanke bagged a brace in four minutes to complete the hosts’ comeback. James Maddison, who came off the bench when Spurs were leading, then scored a free-kick to seal victory in injury time.
While acknowledging Villa’s failings on the day, skipper McGinn added: “We’ve got to keep our heads a wee bit in there and have some perspective. Many teams will come here and suffer that defeat.”It got loud. Probably as loud as I’ve heard it as an away player. It’s about staying positive. Spurs beat us 4-1 last season and we finished above them.
“They punished our mistakes. We had a chance at 2-1 to equalise. The third one was a mistake and then a great free-kick for the fourth.”
Villa would have climbed as high as third in the table if they had beaten Spurs – who started the day five points behind Emery’s side – but after suffering their second league defeat of the season, the gap between the two sides has reduced to two points.
