West Ham have appealed Mohammed Kudus’ improper conduct charge, but the forward could still be hit with a lengthy ban.
Kudus was originally shown a yellow card after lashing out at Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven last weekend, but this was upgraded to a red card after a VAR review.
After his altercation with the defender, Kudus then also pushed Pape Matar Sarr in the face.
The Football Association charged the forward, alleging his behaviour after he was sent off was improper. West Ham and Tottenham were also charged for failing to control their players. While West Ham also contested this allegation, Spurs accepted a £20,000 fine.
Kudus will be banned for a minimum of three games but could face a longer spell on the sidelines if the FA find him guilty.
West Ham, who host Manchester United on Sunday, expect to hear the outcome of their case by the end of next week.
Head coach Julen Lopetegui said he had spoken to Kudus about his actions, adding that he believes some of the forward’s frustration had stemmed from Ghana’s results during the previous international break.
‘I think that he brings his frustration with his national team too, because they lost and drew their matches and that was bad.
‘It can never be one excuse to lose your balance, your head. I think that you have to use this frustration to do better and to work more, to have more spirit, to be able to overcome bad moments. But not to do this kind of behaviour because in this case you are working against you. He knows that.
‘He has to improve his temperament because this can’t happen. I am sure this will be the last time it happens. The only way to handle frustration is to focus on the match because these kind of behaviours ruin the match.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has finally spoken out about the incident that sent Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus off in last weekend’s London derby.
He also added that the West Ham star hit him in the face when he stood up to confront him for kicking him after he fell.
“I had a duel with Mohammed Kudus and fell down on the ground. I had a feeling that he kicked too much through the ball and hit me like three times. I was a bit mad and stood up and pushed him.
“Then he literally punched me, he punched me in the face and I went down. I didn’t know what happened afterward,” he said as quoted by Sky Sports.
Kudus charged with violent conduct
Kudus was expected to be sidelined for three matches but now risks a lengthy ban after the FA charged him with violent conduct.
However, Micky van de Ven believes the FA could handle the situation differently.
“That was the situation. If the FA say you need to get fined, it’s not how I think about it. I think it should be a different situation.”
Kudus was sent off in the 86th minute after an altercation with the Dutch defender in West Ham’s 4-1 defeat to Tottenham.
In it, he kicked the center-back on the floor and hit him in the face. He also appeared to have brushed Pape Matar Sarr in the face.
Before that, Kudus opened the scoring with a right-footed strike in the 18th minute after Jared Bowen dazzled his way past Destiny Udogie in the 18-yard box.
Therefore, Kudus faces an automatic three-game ban with Hammers scheduled to take on Manchester United on Sunday in another Premier League encounter.
However, the FA have now announced that they have charged the 24-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam star and this means he could face an extended suspension if found guilty.
“Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Mohammed Kudus have been charged following their Premier League match on Saturday, 19 October,” a statement read.
“Tottenham Hotspur allegedly failed to ensure that their players didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the 82nd minute.
“West Ham United allegedly failed to ensure that their players didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way at the same time.
“Mohammed Kudus allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used violent conduct after the offence that he was sent off for.
“Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Mohammed Kudus have until Thursday, 24 October, to provide their responses.”
Kudus is one of West Ham’s key players having scored twice and provided one assist in 10 matches across all competitions this season.
