West ham have denied suggestions they could face the threat of a points deduction through administration, after reports claimed that referee made a poor decision yesterday against Manchester United
The Premier League has explained why West Ham were given a penalty in their 2-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
Referee, David Coote did not award the spot-kick after Matthijs De Ligt clashed into Danny Ings.
But VAR Michael Oliver advised Coote to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Jarrod Bowen then dispatched the penalty past Andre Onana to score what proved to be the winner, after Casemiro cancelled out Cyrensio Summerville’s opener.
A statement from the Premier League released shortly, read: “The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by De Ligt on Ings.
“The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review.
“The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”
But the hosts were subsequently awarded a penalty, converted by Jarrod Bowen, after referee David Coote was sent to the pitchside monitor to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings. And an explanation has now been offered as to why the penalty was awarded.

The defeat in London leaves United 14th after nine matches with just four wins across all competitions. United are also yet to win in Europe after three consecutive draws.
Sunday’s loss will inevitably pile pressure on Ten Hag, who oversaw a eight-placed finish in the league last season – United’s lowest since 1990. But the Dutchman will feel aggrieved about West Ham’s controversial penalty on Sunday.
When asked post-match by BBC Sport if he had spoken to refereeing officials about the decision, he said: “I spoke with them. But the decision is made.
“There’s no way back and that’s football. That’s a third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and on our scores and where we are in the table. It’s not right.”
