But a mistake from micky van de ven allowed mateta to receive a crossing to steal in and poke the ball into the back of the net to lead on 31th minutes.
Ange Postecoglou has gone back and forth in an awkward exchange with a reporter after Tottenham’s loss to Crystal Palace.
A goal for Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 31st minute was enough for Palace to move out of the relegation zone, with the Spurs dropping to eighth spot on the Premier League table.
After the match, an interviewer from BBC made a generic remark towards Postecoglou, stating “you’re not happy obviously” and that clearly drew the ire of the Aussie coach.
“I identified another problem which was we didn’t battle today like they did.
“I think if you’re suggesting that our fans somehow weren’t happy with today, then I think that’s a fair assessment. I’m not happy. The players aren’t happy.”
Postecoglou’s frosty response will only add to the noise around the Spurs boss, who started his tenure with plenty of praise but has failed to turn the goodwill into consistent results for the London-based club.
The loss against one of the league’s battlers in Palace won’t help his cause, with Postecoglou admitting his side “should have dealt with it better” on Monday (AEDT).
“It was one of those games with a lot of stoppages and battles and they ended up winning a lot of them and coming out on top,” he said.
“There was a lot of disruption and it was hard to get any fluency. They did better than us. It turned into a game they were thriving on and we should have dealt with it better.”
Tottenham now turn their attention to a clash with fourth-placed Aston Villa next week.
Former Tottenham midfielder and pundit Jamie O’Hara has slammed Ange Postecoglou’s decision to play Mikey Moore against Palace.
Postecoglou decided to give the 17-year-old a start in the front three alongside Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson at Selhurst Park, but O’Hara believes the manager should have stuck gone with experience and stuck with Timo Werner.
He told Sky Sports:
“I think Ange [Postecoglou] got it wrong. I think he picked the wrong team. Starting a 17-year-old away from home against Crystal Palace is a big, big ask. He [Moore] did alright but it’s a big ask to come in for that game and make something happen.
“Use him for 20 or 25 minutes, but the damning indictment of that is that Timo Werner has been so poor he [Postecouglou] has had to start Mikey Moore. But, I would have stuck with Werner and given him another game, especially away from home as he’s experienced.”
Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the game just after the half hour mark to secure their first Premier League win of the season.
It was a poor performance from Tottenham, perhaps one of their worst since Ange took over. They failed to handle the intense pressing by Oliver Glasner’s men, and could have easily conceded a few more.
Vicario was one of the few Tottenham players who can come out of the game with their heads held high after putting in a solid performance. He kept Spurs into the game for as long as he could manage.
