Ben Davies is yet to play a single minute for Tottenham this season.
But that hasn’t stopped the Spurs defender from going on international duty and putting in two outstanding performances for Wales.
Craig Bellamy is in charge of the Wales national team and they drew his first game in charge against Turkey on Friday in the UEFA Nations League, with Davies starting at centre-back.
But they picked up a historic first win under Bellamy on Monday night when Wales secured a crucial 2-1 triumph over Montenegro, with both of their goals coming after three minutes.
Davies might be a forgotten man at Tottenham because he clearly isn’t part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, but he is sending out a gentle reminder to everyone about his qualities.
The 31-year-old, who is mainly a left-back, but can now operate at the heart of the defence, was dubbed a ‘colossal’ by his nation’s media for his latest performance.
Tottenham face Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday and it isn’t going to get Davies a start, but at least he has some much-needed minutes under his belt.
Y Clwb Pel-Droed loved Davies’ performance and gave him a rating of 8/10, with Wales Online agreeing with their counterparts.
Ben Davies stars for Wales in UEFA Nations League
‘The skipper was a rock at the back for Wales as he has been on so many occasions over the years,’ wrote Y Clwb Pel-Droed. ‘He made a vital goal-line clearance, not for the first time in a Wales shirt’.
‘Did everything asked of him all night,’ wrote Wales Online. ‘A colossal performance.’
Destiny Udogie at Tottenham
There can’t be too many complaints as to who the left-back starter should be in Ange Postecoglou’s all-action system.
Udogie was lauded for his debut campaign in the Premier League, with the worry being that there isn’t anyone to fill in if he gets injured.
That happened last season and Davies stepped in, only to be part of Tottenham’s deserved defeat to Arsenal where Bukayo Saka caused him problems.
But Saka and Udogie will renew their battle at the weekend because the Italy star is back on the field and has started the new season strongly.
