Sergio Aguero is one of the greatest strikers the Premier League has ever seen, and now Newcastle United are trying to sign a young man who is just like the Argentinian.
Marcos Leonardo is a 20-year-old striker who plays for Santos in Brazil, but he could soon take his talents to the Premier League.
That is because multiple English clubs are keeping an eye on the South American forward, with Santos braced for bids.
Newcastle one of the clubs interested in Marcos Leonardo
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Leonardo from Santos. They state that the Magpies have watched the Brazilian youngster over the past year.
That is no surprise, as there has been a clear intent from the Toon owners to tap into the South American market. There has been interest in multiple young players from Brazil, as Dan Ashworth looks to unearth the next best thing for a bargain fee.
That is why the likes of Andrey Santos, Angelo, Vitor Roque and Matheus Franca have all been linked with moves to Newcastle, but so far none of them have arrived.
Leonardo is a new name on Newcastle’s radar, and the comparisons to Aguero make it easy to understand why he is a target for the Toon.
Leonardo likened to Aguero
Standing at 5ft 9in, Leonardo is similar in size to Aguero. The Manchester City legend was only 5ft 8in, but his diminutive stature was far from a hinderance. He was able to use his body expertly to get into dangerous positions, leading to him becoming Man City’s all-time leading scorer.
Leonardo is another forward who does not let his height hinder him, as seen by the fact he has already scored three times at the ongoing Under-20 World Cup.
South American football expert Tim Vickery has compared him to Aguero, saying: “There is a kind of Aguero-type striker there, he is not particularly tall but comes alive in the penalty box and I think there is talent there as well.”
It sounds like he is a player with a lot of potential – especially with qualities similar to that of Aguero. That is why he would be a smart addition for Newcastle, who are constantly on the lookout for stars of the future.
