Kieran Trippier opens up on his Daniel Levy conversation and regrettable way he left Tottenham

England right-back Kieran Trippier has been speaking about his departure from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 when he left for Atletico Madrid, and a conversation with club chairman Daniel Levy

Kieran Trippier has spoken about his regret at the way his time at Tottenham Hotspur came to an end.

The England right-back left spurs

in the summer of 2019 for Atletico Madrid, just a couple of months after playing in the Champions League final in the Spanish city for the club. Tripper has since gone on to play for Newcastle United and in an interview with Gary Neville for The overlap podcast ahead of this month’s Euros, the 33-year-old spoke about his exit from north London.

When asked what his biggest regret in football was, Trippier replied that it was the way he left Tottenham because he left “sour” with that being a feeling for him and the club after chats with the chairman Daniel Levy and his manager Mauricio pochettion.

Just I think in the way that I left, I talked with Daniel and the manager,” he said before Neville asked what it was like talking to Levy. “It was difficult, of course it was. I just asked ‘am I part of the plans’, he said to speak to the manager. I went to the manager and asked if I was part of his plans and he said ‘speak to Daniel’. I just kept getting thrown around like a yo-yo.

“As a player you just want clarity. If I need to move on then that’s all I need to hear. Just a bit of honesty. Just tell me the truth and no problem. Players come and go, that’s no problem.”

When Trippier was quizzed on what the best stadium he’d played in was he said that it was Ajax’s Johan Cruyff Arena, simply for that Champions League semi-final comeback night.

When Neville asked who the best player he had played with was, the answer was a similar one to all of those who pulled on a Tottenham shirt during Pochettino’s tenure in charge of the club.

“Mousa Dembele, he was honestly a remarkable player,” said Trippier. “Unbelievable and I don’t think he got the credit he deserved. Unbelievable player.”

The England full-back named Harry Kane as his best ever captain and the man he would want to take a penalty for him if his life depended on it.
