UEFA’s response towards banning Crystal Palace from the Europa League has been revealed.
After winning their first ever major trophy in a historic win over Manchester City in May, Crystal Palace booked their spot in the 2025/26 Europa League – or so they thought.
As it stands, the Eagles participation in the European competition is yet to be confirmed due to fears that they could breach UEFA’s rules on multi-club ownership.
Current rules established by the governing body state that two clubs that have the same ownership are prohibited from featuring in the same competition.This causes a major issue for Palace as the club’s primary shareholder, John Textor, also owns a majority stake in French club Lyon, who finished sixth in Ligue 1, qualifying for the Europa League.
But now, a report from a Sky Sports journalist has revealed exactly how UEFA feel about the potential ban, offering further insight into how likely it is to happen.
Posting on X, chief Sky reporter Kaveh Solheko revealed that the European governing body will try to find a solution to allow Palace, who are adamant that Textor’s involvement in the club is minor, to compete in Europe next season.He wrote: “Crystal Palace are working closely and collaboratively with UEFA to end the uncertainty about their place in next season’s Europa League.
“Palace are in constant communication with UEFA in order to satisfy them that US businessman John Textor does not have decisive influence over the running of the club.
“UEFA are believed to be sympathetic to Palace’s plight and are working with them to find a solution to the problem.
“UEFA recognise the benefit of having Palace in the Europa League next season after they qualified by winning the FA Cup – the first major trophy in their history – last month.
“UEFA want domestic leagues and cups to be competitive and to keep the romance alive of a team like Palace winning the FA Cup and going on to play European football for the first time in their history.”
The journalist also revealed that the American businessman is reportedly in talks to sell Eagle Football Holdigs, who owns 43% of Palace while Textor personally owns 30%.
In addition to the above, talkSPORT claim Palace are expected to stay in the Europa League, with Textor not having a ‘decisive influence’ in the club.
