Oliver Glasner has labelled Liam Roberts’ foul on Jean-Philippe Mateta as ‘terrible’ as the Crystal Palace striker was stretchered off in their 3-1 fifth round FA Cup win over Millwall on Saturday.
The French striker was clattered into by Roberts, 30, after just eight minutes at Selhurst Park.
VAR called referee Michael Oliver over to check the replay and the Lions stopper was issued with a straight red card.
Mateta was given oxygen during his treatment and then stretchered off before being taken to hospital.
Palace chairman Steve Parish slammed Roberts and called the foul the worst he had ever seen.
“He is conscious and in hospital,” said Glasner to the BBC.
“His ear looks terrible and it’s a very serious injury.
“We hope all the best for him. Let’s see.
“We’re not really happy today.
“It’s a great win and great to go into the quarter-finals, but when you lose a player, especially with a foul like this, you have two different feelings in your stomach.
“I didn’t want to see it, but we have to talk about it and I just watched it.
“It’s terrible. I’m sure that the goalkeeper didn’t want to injure JP – no player wants this.
“If you go to the ball like this with the intensity of the foot at this height, you just can’t do it.
“It’s so dangerous. I don’t want to blame him but it was a terrible foul.”
