A forgotten Tottenham player is expected to leave the club on a permanent deal – 18 months since he last appeared in the Premier League
Ange Postecoglou made many changes to his Spurs team when he arrived in north London last summer, spending a total of more than £100m on James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson
Spurs also have transfer commitments linked to previous deals, with Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski arriving permanently for around £70m
This meant the Australian manager had to balance his books by selling some players, although the majority of his purchases were funded by the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for 100 million board
One player who has left the club on loan is Djed Spence, who has joined Championship side Leeds until the end of the season
However, Daniel Farke’s side have decided to take the option of ending his loan deal, with reports claiming there are concerns about the player’s professionalism and deadlines to meet
In a later interview with The Athletic, Spence asserted that some of the issues were “a little disproportionate”
Tottenham have decided to loan the right-back again, with Spence joining Serie A side Genoa until the end of the season
The 23-year-old has played all but two matches for his new club, but is not a regular starter and often appears on the substitutes’ bench
However, Fabrizio Romano claims Genoa are negotiating a permanent deal for Spence, who has made just four Premier League appearances for Spurs after signing from Middlesbrough in 2022
Former manager Antonio Conte has said that Spence is not his signature, with the Spurs hierarchy instead pushing for a deal to be completed
Romano reports that both clubs are “progressing” in discussions over Spence and want to reach an agreement before the end of June
Spence played a key role in helping Nottingham Forest win promotion from the Championship in the summer of 2022, establishing himself as one of the best full-backs outside the Premier League
He then infamously sent a tweet to former Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock over his promotion, before starting a new chapter at Spurs
Spence hopes to regain that form in the 2024/25 season – wherever he plays
