Adam Idah hasn’t hit the heights at Celtic after his strong loan spell last season.

Let’s be honest, if Celtic hadn’t signed Idah this summer, then there would have been anger and frustration from the supporters because of how well he did.

But the fact is Celtic paid big money for Idah and he now hasn’t scored in the Premiership since November.

Brendan Rodgers has openly stated he wants to add another striker to his ranks – now, that could come via the transfer market or it could come in the form of youngster, Johnny Kenny.

The Celtic academy star was recalled from his loan spell at Shamrock Rovers this month and Kenny made his debut during the win over Ross County.

But where is he in Celtic’s pecking order, alongside the out-of-form Idah and the main man, Kyogo Furuhashi?

Celtic beat Kilmarnock 2-1 in the Scottish Cup over the weekend, with Idah coming off the bench for the last seven minutes and Kenny not in the squad.

Given Idah’s struggles, Gordon Dalziel shared that he is hearing people now view Kenny pushing ahead of Idah in the pecking order, as he told Open Goal.

It remains to be seen if that happens because the signs suggest that Rodgers still views Idah as a key player and Kenny as someone trying to prove his worth.

But James McFadden explained how the price-tag on Idah’s head hasn’t helped and it has probably made him worse because of ‘expectations’.

“In the big games now, aye (Kyogo will now play up front in the big games instead of Idah),” responded Dalziel. “There are people now talking about the young boy Kenny going ahead of Idah. By the way, he doesn’t look bad. There is something decent about him. But I think he will need to wait (his time).”

McFadden added about Idah: “That’s what a price-tag does for you. Idah comes in on-loan last year and he scored big goals at big moments. Everyone is like ‘aye, that’s great. Sign him’.

“£9 million now, they go, right, ‘we have a £9 million player’. But he isn’t any better than when he was here last year. Just because he cost more, it doesn’t mean he is better. He hasn’t got better through money. Sometimes, you can get worse because of expectation.”

Idah’s numbers for Celtic this season

Perhaps Idah needs a spark a goal, something special or something just coming off his backside, perhaps then he will showcase his true worth.

Last season, the Republic of Ireland international scored some big goals, including the winner in the Scottish Cup final against Rangers.

Perhaps the crunch moments of the season and the knockout stages of the Champions League – if Celtic go that far – will provide Idah the chance to step up when it matters most because he has history.

“Which is scary if you think about it because he did really struggle. He couldn’t settle in.
