Tottenham fought back from 1-0 down to record a resounding 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke – who equalled a Rafael van der Vaart record – and James Maddison ensured Morgan Rogers’ opener was cancelled out in some style, with the result moving Spurs to within just two points of the Villans in the Premier League table.

It would have been very easy for Tottenham fans to turn on Ange Postecoglou’s side after going 1-0 down, following last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against a struggling Crystal Palace side.

However, in fairness to the supporters, they stuck with the players and motivated them to turn that 1-0 deficit into a comprehensive victory, with John McGinn even making a comment about the fans in his post match interview.

What John McGinn said about Tottenham supporters

The Scotland international found time to praise Spurs fans for making the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a cauldron of noise, despite his side being on the end of a hammering in N17.

McGinn told the BBC: “We’ve got to keep our heads a wee bit in there and have some perspective. Many teams will come here and suffer that defeat.

“It got loud. Probably as loud as I’ve heard it as an away player.

“It’s about staying positive. Spurs beat us 4-1 last season and we finished above them. They punished our mistakes. We had a chance at 2-1 to equalise. The third one was a mistake and then a great free-kick from the fourth.”

Spurs fans must stick with Ange Postecoglou

Consistency is still an issue at times, as seen in last week’s loss at Crystal Palace and that 3-2 defeat against Brighton, having led 2-0, but there is certainly something exciting happening in N17 under Postecoglou.

Spurs now have ten wins from 15 games across all competitions so far this season, and can also boast an exciting crop of talents such as Pape Sarr – who Pep Guardiola admires – Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Micky van de Ven.

Of course, it must be frustrating for Tottenham fans to witness their side play so well at times, before turning in poor displays like the performance at Crystal Palace, but there is absolutely enough for them to get behind under Postecoglou right now.

Spurs blow Villa away after the break
Another impressive win capped an outstanding week for Spurs, who have responded to their abject defeat at Crystal Palace by dumping Manchester City out of the League Cup and underlining their credentials in the Premier League with a thumping victory over fellow top-four hopefuls Villa.

At half-time, the game felt all-too-familiar for Spurs, who had more of the ball in the opening period but struggled to create chances and conceded a sloppy goal from a set-piece.
For 45 minutes, Villa calmly followed Arsenal’s blueprint for beating Ange Postecoglou’s side at home: stay compact, funnel Spurs down the middle of the pitch and capitalise with a dead-ball goal.

But Spurs were outstanding in the second half, producing a characteristic and exhilarating comeback in front of their single-tier South Stand.
Heung-min Son’s outstanding cross for Johnson’s back-post finish was the piece of quality the hosts needed to unlock the game and, from there, Spurs never looked back.
Solanke had cut a frustrated figure in the first half – finishing it with just nine touches – but the England striker demonstrated what he can do with service, twice finishing slick moves in the box to take the game away from Villa.

His first goal was outstanding, a cute dink over the onrushing Emiliano Martinez from Dejan Kulusevski’s pass.
Pape Sarr, who was outstanding, was involved in the build-up to both Solanke’s goals, underlining his growing importance to Postecoglou’s side.
