A mouth-watering relegation six-pointer takes centre stage at Goodison Park on Wednesday night as Wolves take on Everton.

Two esteemed top-flight clubs are both in similar positions; Wolves and Everton are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table while the two managers are under huge pressure from the fans.

There were calls for Sean Dyche to leave the Toffees after his side were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United, and similarly, Wolves fans urged Gary O’Neil to be sacked following the 4-2 defeat to Brentford.

It sets up an exciting encounter between two teams who are desperate to win all three points to not only preserve their league status but also save their manager’s jobs.

O’Neil has zero concerns over his Wolves future despite his side placing 18th in the table, and the 41-year-old is now eyeing a remarkable record.

Wolves can break impressive 52-year record vs Everton

The Old Gold have broken records for all of the wrong reasons this term. For the first time in 40 years, an English top-flight side has scored more than 20 goals and conceded more than 30 as early as the 13th week of the season, that side is the Wanderers.

Wolves are also on track to break Sheffield United’s record for most goals conceded in a Premier League campaign after they shipped 104 in 38 matches.

Under the tutelage of O’Neil, they’ve let in a whopping 32 goals in just 13 matches in 2024/25, exposing their defensive frailties.

While being carved open has been an issue, the Wanderers have been free-scoring, as demonstrated by the record they could break against Everton.

Per BBC Sport, Wolves could score multiple goals in six consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since 1972.

As seen by the above graphic, Wolves have scored at least twice in their last five matches, taking their tally to 22 for the campaign, with no other side in the bottom half netting more.

Matheus Cunha looking to break 62-year record vs Everton

Forward Matheus Cunha is one huge reason why they’ve been prolific in the final third, as the Brazilian has plundered seven goals and provided three assists this term.

Cunha, who is in talks over a new Wolves contract, has carried the baton for O’Neil’s men on his travels, netting five away goals in 2024/25.

Remarkably, if the 25-year-old bags at Goodison Park, he will become the first Wolves player since Jimmy Murray in 1962 to score in five consecutive top-flight away matches.

The stage is set for the outstanding forward to inspire his side to victory, with a win helping keep his manager in the dugout for at least another game.

O’Neil admitted Wolves could not match Fulham’s offer for Broja, aiming a subtle dig at owners Fosun at the time.

“There were a few [strikers] I really liked but we couldn’t afford any,” the Wolves manager said.

“We were speaking to Chelsea for most of the day about Broja but we couldn’t match Fulham. That’s where we’re at as a football club but we haven’t been deducted 10 points.”

Fulham agreed a loan for Broja that January, which was a blessing in disguise for the Old Gold as the Albainian flattered to deceive at Craven Cottage.

Broja could feature for Everton against Wolves

After an uneventful loan spell at Fulham passed Broja by, scoring no goals in only eight appearances, the striker moved on in the summer.

Everton captured the forward on loan from Chelsea after his return to Stamford Bridge and he’s since made just one appearance for the Toffees at youth level due to injury.

However, that figure could be about to rise as Dyche confirmed that the ex-Wolves target will have a part to play against the Old Gold.

“Broja certainly will be in and around it [the squad],” the Everton manager said during his pre-match press conference.

Having not scored in the Premier League since October 2023, there’s a small chance that the Albania international will find the net against Wolves and as we know, stranger things have happened.
