Newcastle United were once again far from their best in the final third against Crystal Palace.

It is becoming a frustrating trend this season. Newcastle United continue to be poor going forward and it proved costly on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park with Eddie Howe’s side only taking one shot in the full 90 minutes.
The Magpies took the lead when transfer target Marc Guehi scored an own goal following Anthony Gordon’s cross. However, Daniel Munoz rescued a point for Palace with an injury-time header.

Newcastle defended resiliently and actually ended the match with higher possession, but the lack of chances being created was nothing short of dire.

Joelinton struggled for Newcastle vs Crystal Palace

Before the November international break, Howe enjoyed some success pushing Joelinton out wide rather than in midfield.

Howe said Joelinton is like “gold dust” after he scored in Newcastle’s win over Nottingham Forest, but all momentum before the break has now disappeared.

Newcastle lost to West Ham and then drew at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and Joelinton had a game to forget against Palace.

Joelinton started out wide again but struggled to have an impact on the match at all. He lost possession 21 times and won zero out of 10 ground duels.

He also attempted six dribbles but failed to complete a single one. In terms of his attacking output, it was a disastrous performance.

Joelinton slammed for ‘lazy’ moment vs Crystal Palace

Newcastle are at their very best when they are full of energy and intensity. That has been seen a handful of times this season, but not regularly enough.

That was the case against Palace too, and BBC pundit Danny Murphy pinpointed a moment of “lazy” decision-making from Joelinton when he ignored his teammates around him before hitting a cross out of play.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Murphy said: “It’s not always a technical thing, but it’s also a decision-making thing high up the pitch.

“Here, there is a little overlap, a little easy ball for a simple cross into the box. He [Joelinton] chooses not to and then the delivery is really poor, it’s lazy.

“A high, loopy cross with only two players in the box… We have seen Newcastle be dynamic and have good spells and score lots of goals but this is a far cry from it.”
